How much can I expect to pay for a finished log cabin?
The cost per square foot for building a cabin in the United States can vary significantly based on factors such as location, design complexity, and materials. Additionally, the remoteness of the property can influence costs, particularly for transportation and accessibility. Here are some general ranges:
Low Range Cost: For simpler cabins with basic finishes and minimal customization, costs generally start around $150 to $250 per square foot. This range assumes relatively accessible locations with straightforward site preparation.
High Range Cost: For more complex designs, higher-quality materials, and extensive customization, costs can range from $300 to $550 per square foot or more. Remoteness can further increase costs due to additional expenses for transporting materials and accessing the site.
These estimates cover basic construction costs but may not include additional factors such as land preparation, permits, utilities, and interior furnishings.

What makes a True Log Cabin stand apart?
At True Log, we source our log from dead standing timber. Dead standing logs are like nature’s superheroes, naturally seasoned by the elements. While their moisture content varies, they generally range from 15% to 20%, making them drier than freshly harvested green logs. This low moisture content is a game-changer for construction, minimizing post-construction
settling, shrinking, and warping in log structures. Builders cherish the natural seasoning of dead standing logs, contributing to stability and suitability for log homes.
Natural Stability: Dead standing logs, having weathered the elements over an extended period, showcase enhanced stability through gradual seasoning during their upright existence.
• Environmental Sustainability:
Embrace sustainable construction with dead standing logs, contributing to repurposing wood without energy- intensive drying processes. This choice aligns with eco-conscious building methods and reduces the demand
for freshly harvested wood.
• Low Environmental Impact: Harvesting dead standing logs
minimizes impact on living forests, fostering biodiversity and promoting ecosystem preservation—a perfect match for sustainable forestry practices.
Carbon Sequestration: By repurposing dead standing logs, you actively support carbon sequestration, preventing the
release of stored carbon into the atmosphere. It’s an environmentally friendly choice with potential
carbon footprint benefits.

Do True Log Cabins require chinking?
Some people prefer the look of full chinking but it’s not a requirement. We believe that proper sealed joints help keep moisture out and reduce log movement. We recommend a caulking sealant on every log cabin and home to make it as energy efficient and sealed up as possible. This is not a chinking but it is similar idea to caulk used around sinks and bathtubs to prevent water leaks. Specialized log sealant stretches to accommodate log movement. Sashco makes a product called log builder. We can include stain and sealant as an add-on option to your cabin kit.

Talk to me about "Log Settling"
In log home construction, “log settling” is the natural process where logs gradually adjust and settle over time due to factors like drying, weight compression, and gravity. As logs lose moisture and adapt to their surroundings, slight shifts occur, contributing to a more stable structure. Log settling is a normal part of log home construction, adding to the unique charm of these structures. Proper building techniques and maintenance are key to managing log settling, ensuring the long-term structural integrity and aesthetic appeal of log homes.
How can I reduce and prepare for "Log Settling?
Proper Log Selection: We at True Log, choose high-quality, seasoned logs for your cabin. Well-dried logs are less likely to experience significant settling, as much of the moisture has already been removed. You can read about our logs HERE
Pre-Treatment: We recommend treating logs with a sealant or preservative to minimize moisture absorption and reduce the likelihood of insect infestations. This can help preserve the logs and mitigate settling. You can choose the add-on Seal and stain product during checkout.
Allow for Settling Gaps: We design your cabin with settling gaps in mind. During construction, we recommend leaving adequate space above windows and doors to accommodate settling. We also include settling jacks with your log cabin kit to allow for post construction adjustments as settling occurs.
